Surreal Art by Aly ElShamy, 6 years old.

Friday, November 20, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Using Office Powerpoint and Paint, my little brother created very interesting compositions here. Not only does he amaze me at digital art, but his hand-drawn works are pretty amazing too. He would have random abstract things happening at very interesting dimensions and perspective. Forget house, flowers, tree and family. My brother draws a illusive locker hallway with two people (one of them has a head with two bodies) sliding down a wire fence. At the end of the hallway, there is a finish line. The middle has a stop sign, and the top says "WARNING" in block lettering. Speech bubbles say "WhyemIDenhes" (Why am I doing this?) and "Imsic" (I'm sick?). Deep. The next Dali, I hope.

Milky Way Alarm Clock Adds Some Art to Your Nightstand

at 10:21 PM

The smooth and sleek design of the Milky Way by Henrik Amberla allow this device to serve two functions, as an alarm clock and as an art object for your nightstand. With an innovative design and interesting interface, this is truly a product we would not mind having in our home. We at Unplggd are suckers for unique functional design, which means we just could not pass up the opportunity to blog about this clock.

The creator of the Milky Way chose the shape in order to "reflect on the duality and unity of the sleep/wake cycle." To engage the snooze function you simply turn the device. Setting the clock and the alarm is also done through another turning motion.

Amberla, a Swedish Industrial and Strategic Design student created this device as a 'formgiving" exercise and it is much to our chagrin, not currently in production.

For more information on the Milky Way and to see some of his other work, check out designer, Henrik Amberla.

How important is design in your alarm clock purchasing decisions? Would you purchase the Milky Way should it become available?

The Clock of Clocks: Using Analog Clocks to Created Digital Time

at 10:13 PM

The Clock Clock was created by Swedish designers Humans since1982. This is a wall clock prototype made out of 24 analog clocks that show the time also in a fake digital way. I can't tell exactly how many times an hour this happens, or if you have to push a button for it to work, but it will use the hands of the smaller clocks to create a large digital-like display to show the time. This cool looking clock is currently on display at the Rhösska Design Museum in Goteborg, Sweden.

This is one cool wall clock. I'd like to have it in my living room. The fact that all of the analog clocks combine to make a large digital one is pretty neat. It's almost hypnotic to watch them go through their forms and display the time. We really like that the hands of the clocks can move about and suddenly show the time. You have to watch the video in order to understand how this is exactly accomplished. It's neat to see the hands of the different clocks move together, it's like they are synchronized. They've also created a font to celebrate their clock, but since their website is currently down due to the amount of traffic that was generated, you'll have to wait to check it out for yourself. Meanwhile, you can see how the font looks in one of the images below. [via Designboom]

Colour: The Next Limited Resource?

at 12:06 AM

Who owns color?

These trends in limiting color usage and the rights that brands have to trademark colors is a difficult road to navigate. Not everyone is well versed in trademark laws and intellectual property rights.

On one side, companies need to protect their brand identity, which they’ve invested much capital into. On the other side, there are designers and artists trying to create great work with a limited color palette.

There of course is a fear that at some point, the best color hues will have been claimed and there would be no other good colors left to design with. How likely is this scenario? As likely as anyone would have imagined being sued by T-mobile for using the color magenta.

The Million Dollar Homepage
http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/
Not really a trend, but worth mentioning since it was something truly creative and completely different at the time. Conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew, a college student who needed to raise money for his tuition, he came up with an idea to try and make $1 million by selling 1,000,000 pixels for $1 each on a single web page. He ended up selling every single pixel making $1 million with several imitators copying his idea.
